I'm thinking of adding some more different elements to my blog, instead of just reviews and "sorry i've been away" messages.

Personally, I love discussion posts and lists in general. On my blog, these tend to get the most views and interaction, which does make me feel a little less alone here... Also, adding a good amount of pictures/graphics tends to attract interest. Just some thoughts. Hope this helps! :)
