Typical YA Dystopia Books

I've read a lot of young adult books in my time and I've noticed that most of them have the same base-plot (that's the only way I can describe it).

For example, YA dystopians tend to go like this:

* Messed up crazy society
* Hero/Heroine attends/doesn't attend an event that changes life
* Something (terrible) happens
* Rebellion to overthrow corrupt governments
* Hooray everyone lives happily ever after, minus a few dead characters.

Here are some examples:

Now, don't get me wrong, I love reading YA Dystopia series, but I feel like a lot of them are trilogies and end too soon without fixing all the problems they've discovered or set out to fix, and there isn't much closure by the end of the series (I'm talking about you Champion (Legend #3), yes I am). I want to find a good dystopian series that doesn't have this same base-plot and is something completely different that will make me remember it as a standout series/trilogy.

As always, I'd love to hear your views on this!

  1. You need to read Angelfall. It is very, very good.

  3. This is why I'm avoiding dystopian future type books (other than a few of the classics) at the moment. Currently it's a really popular genre because of the Hunger Games, and due its immense success publishers saw a gap in the market. I'm assuming that everything following the Hunger Games gets published because it's similar to the Hunger Games. Something similar happened with Twilight too, with a massive influx of paranormal YA.

    Angelfall is very good though. I haven't read the second book, so I can't comment on it as a series. If you want a proper, classic dystopian future book though, you should read I Am Legend -- the ending is phenomenal!
