Yeah... no. This book would have been amazing when I was 13 and just got into YA Fantasy. It had a kind of The Mortal Instruments vibe that I've kind of now outgrown. It was interesting at the beginning, I thought it was cliche but definitely could have been going somewhere different. Towards the end it fell really flat for me, and to be honest I can't even remember what happened.
Leonie was an okay character - she had her issues, major ones: selfish, bratty etc but she was alright for the most part. I really really liked Korren, he was my favourite. But he was also like every other male love interest in YA fantasy books too. Hates the girl --> loves the girl. It's just so bloody typical.
I really liked the world that this was set in, it was really interesting and the whole 'kytaen slave' thing had so so SO much potential, I'm kind of disappointed that it didn't go where I was hoping it would (if that makes any sense). There was a lot of potential, but it just wasn't for me. I rated this book 2* on Goodreads!
